History

The 5th of December 1492 Christopher Columbus caravels arrived on the island, that then became a Spanish colony. The Hispaniola island was the first European colony of the New World and its capital Santo Domingo is the first American city, the first cultural institutions and social colonies originated from, here was built the first castles, the first churches and the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first monuments and the first university of the new world.

In ancient times, the Dominican Republic was covered by a swarmed rainforest mantle with thousands of flora and fauna species of which around 1500 non existent anywhere else. Today most of it has been reclaimed and the trees have been cut down, but isolated areas still exist where nature is uncontaminated.

 

 

 


Marine Flora and Fauna

The marine nature is spectacular, proud to mention the meeting place of the whales in the Bahia di Samana during the mating season. Manatees, pilot dolphins and over 8 sea tortoises live in the waters surrounding Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic offers many opportunities for excursions by foot, in the Central Plateaus or along the countries beaches.


 

Some Sport

When it comes to surfing, there are a lot of excellent places for this sport, along the Northern and Eastern coast, the waves are immediately formed west of Sosua, but also south of Bahia Samana. Diving is a very popular sport in the Dominican Republic. Along the Northern coast you can find immersion areas and on the seabed you can admire different wreckages to explore, while further South the water is warmer and the best protected coral barrier. The splendid Saona island in front of Bayahibe where on board of boats you can visit the best seabeds of Catalinita a small island with marvellous seabed’s, all of which is a protected area inside the Parque National del el Este. Also Barahona and Cabo Rojo, near Pedernales are areas enjoyed by the underwater swimmers. At Bahia Samana different navigation companies organise whale watching excursions in the December to March season. .

Santo Domingo ( La Capitale )

The capital of the Dominican Republic, first European city to be founded in the New World, is typically Caribbean: it offers many things to do, it is really worth a day visit. The colonial buildings, the Colonial Area from the Spanish conquest of America, docking point of colonies and conquistadores, Cristoforo Colombu’s son, Diego’s residence is very beautiful, the Catedral Primada de America, first Christian church of the New World, the Parque Colon, with the statue of the celebrated admiral. In the capital there are dozens of museums, from the indigenous population to the colonial history to amber. Gardens, zoos and parks, very green and present in the city, for fun there are numerous discos, night clubs and casinos to pass the night, there is also a good amount of restaurants..

Santiago

The second city if the Dominican Republic is Santiago de los Caballeros, the commercial and industrial knot of the Valley of Cibao, Santiago , welcomes industries for the transformation of non refined sugar and tobacco and for the production of rum and cigars in Santiago there is one of the best universities of the country. Restaurants and museums where you can pass an interesting day, do some shopping in Calle del Sol.

Places to visit

The Northern coast of the Dominican Republic (Costa dell’Ambra) in this area you can find the best fields of precious minerals, beaches that extend towards the east to Puerto Plata. This costal stretch has developed through tourists. Small towns where you can breath the typical Caribbean atmosphere. Puerto Plata, the main coastal centre, is proud of their many animated roads, full of places to pass the night, walking in the Malecon (on the Capitals promenade), getting the funicular from Monte Isabel de Torres, the peak which dominates the city of Puero Plata.

Sosua with its white sandy beaches and coconut palms in Sosua you will find a very active movida local discos with live music on the beach and many restaurants. You have to visit the Museum of the Jewish community which populated for a long time this area. Even Sosua offers the possibility of immersions in its splendid waters, water skiing, beautiful horse riding walks.

Cabarete is a splendid bay considered one of the best in the world of its surfing and kite surfing, in this area there are white beaches, bars, discos with live music every night, always busy and fun.

Cayo Levantado is a very attractive and wild area, uncontaminated forests and three beautiful desert beaches. On the west, the Parque Nacional Los Haitises is built up of islands covered by the mangrove jungles and forests, to be explored by boat.

Jarabacoa is an exceptional place here the mild climate allows the cultivation of cherries, apples and even strawberries in the orchards on the side of the mountain, in Jarabacoa it is always spring, this is without doubt the favourite spot for the Dominicans to pass there holidays in the cool, in the area full of rivers and streams in many it is possible to do rafting and canoeing, here are the famous waterfalls of the Aguas Blancas, natural swimming pools in which you can bathe, not to miss is the excursion on horse back in the Reserva Cientif’ca Valle Nuevo national park established in 1956, in the area there is also present a golf course for the passionate.

Between the national parks the Parque Nacional Jaragua, an arid reserve which welcome around 100 species of birds, and the Parque Nacional Sierra de Baoruca, mountain region full of orchids. The third park of the area is an island in the centre of Lago Enriquillo which finds itself in depression which makes the deserted landscape, in the lake a populated colony of crocodiles, the Parque Nacional Isla Cabritos, full of fauna and it is a destination visited a lot by every part of the island.

Culture and Costume

Different cultures left their prints on the Dominican society the traditional taino (kind population), are used in the modern language, a few of the words of this antique population like amaca (hammock) and tabacco (tobacco). The Spanish colonies gave the country their language, the catholic religion, while the Africans brought to the island as slaves brought with them the beliefs of their ancestors, art and music and even the United States troops left traces of their presence in the Dominican Republic: in fact, the population of the island loves baseball, an exciting mix! Music and dance are at the heart of the Dominican culture. The most popular form of dance is the merengue, which is danced and listened to on full volume nearly everywhere. The bachata, popular Dominican music, expresses in numerous songs inspired by broken hearts and the loss of the loved one. The salsa is probably the third diffused musical genre on the island, but jazz, rock, hip-hop and any other melody which stimulates movement are appreciated, the reggetton is today the young Dominicans music loved for its overwhelming rhythm.


Peninsula of Samana

 

The Samana peninsula extends towards the east of the Dominican Republic from the coast of the Parque Nacional Los Haitises to the south of the Samana bay. Tourists can choose between the major attractions of the enchanting sea area like Las Galeras, Las Terrenas, Cayo Levantado with charming beaches and tourist structures. The major attractions of the Peninsula is that for three months of the year it is possible to embark to observe the magnificent show of the Samana whales. Samana

Is situated on the northern shore of the bay of the Peninsula. Samana’ is a small and calm town close to the sea with bright colours rich of vivacious forests. Cayo Levantado

An island that is proud of the richest vegetation of the peninsula and at least three of its most beautiful deserted islands. Whale watching during the mating season is definitely one of the most important and fascinating activities of the Caribbean. The whales choose to mate and give birth in the waters which surround the Samana Peninsula. The characteristic of these mammals is their playful activity when showing off through a real exhibition of jumps out of the water, Raising their huge tails and falling into the ocean creates a marvellous water game. Males and females and even newborns participate in these playful jumps, a great exhibition not to miss.

Las Terrenas e Playa Bonita

Typical antique fishing village, one of the most beautiful white beaches of the peninsula. The famous Playa Bonita or beautiful beach is a few km west a perfect name for this marvellous stretch of sand that bends for a kilometre, full of coconut palms and an emerald green sea. Playa Bonnita is frequented very little it is the typical beach where you can relax with the sound of the sea and the wind of the palms, easily reachable through a trail going through the tropical forest.
